I’ll admit I don’t know how much of a time difference there is between Alien Stage seasons. That’s why I think five to seven years of age difference is feasible for Asahi and Nyx, even if they are related? But they don’t have to be half siblings, of course not. It was terribly boring, was just used to show how "GOOD OF A PAL!" Blitz was despite the other episodes being canon and- The way homophobia was shown? OH GOD that was awful! Not because it was depicting homophobia or bad parents of gay people, especially as someone who's expericed homophobia in my own family, depicting homophobia as a "bad thing" is good and all-

BUT THIS!? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS???!

It looks like what a homophobe would draw in the #alt-right section of Twitter! This, the dildos, the man tied up and being forced to marry another gay men who's the "predator" of the group, his homophobic father being "proven right" by how predatory all the gay men he meets are. Again- look at this image and try to tell me directly that "ITS NOT INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA!" Because you cant, you literally fucking cant. This scene, along with most of the mlm rep of Hazbin and Helluva Boss is that fucking (unintentionally) homophobic with how it portays it's messages.

This entire scene, and all the dildo scenes and moments of Chaz just being "the creepy gay!" stereotype from the 90s felt awful to watch... a gay man, in a show with only mainly gay men who are sex predators being forced to marry a another man so the "OH SO HEALTHY FOR HIM AND ROMANTIC WOMAN" can save him from "the big scawy sex filled mlm!" and is shown as the hero despite letting him be abused and sexually harassed by his boss. This scene directly- directly made me feel insulted as someone who's bisexual. It felt like I was having "LOL UR HOMOSEX SO UR MOSTLY IN IT FOR THE SEX!" shoved in my face like the homophobes did back in fucking elementary school. It felt like I was being bullied as a gay person just by looking at it. Especially knowing of just how many biphobes are going to see this terrible episode and point to their freinds and be like "SEE? SEE?! This is actually one of the worst scenes in the entire series.

This entire scerario, Moxxie's father only being proven "right" because ALL THE GAY MEN IN THIS SHOW ARE SHOWN TO BE "sexual degenerates" and are only "understandable people with morality" if they're with a woman while wlw is only shown as eyecandy. It's either men who are gay are seen as a "fetish" or "predatory abusers" or the women who like mostly or specifically girls are seen as "eyecandy" for the mostly male audience and as a result is validating the homophobes, racists, and ableists in her audience further. So its actually doing the opposite of what was intended for this franchise. It's validating homophobes, not challenging their mindsets to have it's cake and eat it too. They could have easily forced Moxxie to marry a woman (y'know, to show that straight fathers doing this is wrong?! A message we need in this current era of this still happening so much?!) to show how extreme homophobes are and how they see being gay as a "insult to being a man!" but instead they have him surround the marriage with dildos and force him to marry a gay man who's interpreted here as a "sex predator who wont give up his Moksie!" and all.

The fact that they made Chaz a literal 90s stereotype of a gay man here, most gay men in the show being depicted as "predatory" combined with the visuals of dildos everywhere and the only mlm marraige in the show being a forced one-

If the show had good representation, there wouldn't be thousands upon thousands of the fans in websites like 4chan or K^wifarms. It's really that simple... if not extremely sad. AKA: Helluva Boss Season Two Episode Three is validating literal homophobes, racists, and transphobes. Elaborating a bit on this because I feel like it.

First of all, Satine is...not very well written in tcw, in my opinion. Also what grates me a lot is how many of her opinions go narratively unchallenged. She as a character and her opinions and views are super interesting, but are not handled with any greater depth. She can say that she is neutral and a pacifist, but is never truly challenged on what it would mean to be those things in the current political climate. She just kinda gets to be one, and the narrative treats it like the most correct opinion, actually, because oooo both sides baaaaaaad.

In reality, she just kinda appears like a non-voter to me. I'm sorry if this is starting to sound like Satine bashing, but it's mostly about how she was written with very broad strokes only. Instead of getting storylines about how she is handling the neutrality diplomatically or showing how the neutral systems are actually doing and how things are done within them politically, economically, socially etc., she gets the role of someone who says both sides bad, so we should not thrive towards anything, let me just sit in the corner here and pretend I am doing something by making this choice.

Then again, that is a choice she should be allowed to make. As a planetary leader, she should be allowed to say that no, we are not part of this in any way. That should be allowed. Just like every other planet should be allowed to say that no, actually, we do not want to be part of any political or governmental system, thank you. But she cannot state that she is doing the right thing compared to everyone else, either.

The Republic and the CIS are both bad, in a sense that neither is the true moral good, but only one side is actually enslaving people, robbing worlds and bombing civilians. There are so many innocent people in the Galaxy that need help, need someone to fight for them, need food and medical supplies and everything else just to survive. Their suffering is not going to suddenly go away if someone tells them "actually, both sides are bad!" and do nothing.

We as an audience of course know that the war is being orchestrated by Sidious and his allies, but in universe, the characters do not, and it doesn't matter to the people suffering anyway. They are still suffering.

So, no. I do not thing Breha, whose husband is regularly in actual mortal danger because he is trying to bring help to the people suffering, would appreciate Satine too much. She would probably respect Satine's base values, as many of them line with Alderaan's, and of course, Breha's own values, but I honestly cannot see them agreeing on how to actually apply those values. I simply cannot see Breha agreeing that just keeping to themselves and not actually trying to help or shape the Galaxy towards a better future is the right thing to do during a Galatic war.

Hmm. I don't think Breha and Satine would've gotten along too well.

I am confused about my feelings.

I’m genuinely not sure how i feel about this one. And I mean that, because it wasn’t bad...no, it wasn’t bad, I did like it. But how actually...WAS this movie? You know what, here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re jumping right into it! No run-up, we’re just doing it! I gotta talk this one out, y’know? Recap is here and here if you want a journey through my confusion. OK, here we go below!

Review

Cast and Acting: 7/10

Tammy Grimes is fantastic, as is Christopher Lee and Angela Lansbury as the villains of our story. Alan Arkin isn’t bad either, although he has more iffy moments that sound more staged than the rest. Still, outside of those moments, he’s not bad. And René Auberjonois also deserves a HELL of a lot of credit for his short, yet quite memorable, role as the Skull. As for Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges...Farrow and Bridges are not voice actors. Sorry, they just...aren’t. I mean, neither is Arkin or Grimes, but they still did very well with the roles they were given. But Farrow and Bridges just aren’t voice actors. They always manage to sound like they’re speaking into a microphone, and not (as disgustingly pretentious as this sounds) mentally inhabiting their characters. Kind of a necessity for a character that you can’t physically become. So, yeah, since these two are main characters, and one of them is THE main character...y’know, it’s a major issue.

Plot and Writing: 7/10

This story is a very simple one, but also feels a little...disjointed and anticlimactic. Y’know, I thought this was going to be a lot harder to figure out what my rating is, but it’s actually easier than I thought. What’s hard is explaining why it’s so low. And it’s mostly just low because it felt like it was going somewhere big and grand and...it just didn’t. Really fell flat for me, in a lot of ways. It just didn’t work that well for me. Peter Beagle, who wrote the original book, also wrote this film, and it shows. I feel like the book was a lot better in terms of plot flow and fleshing out details, and more probably could’ve been added to the film. And yet, it’s still over an hour and a half long! I don’t know if it’s pacing or the story itself, but I do think it needed some more work done on it. Not bad, but not...great.

Directing and Cinematography: 8/10

So, despite the plot and some acting being disappointing, the art mostly wasn’t! Based off of classic medieval tapestries, the animation is pretty solid throughout. Now, yeah, it is stiff at times, but that’s the Rankin-Bass aesthetic, to be honest. I was prepared for that going in. Artistically, everything else here looks pretty goddamn solid, thanks again to Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass for directing, and Hiroyasu Omoto for Cinematography. Great on both counts.

Production and Art Design: 9/10

And outside of the animation, the actual art style of this film is enrapturing. It’s just a great looking movie, and Topcraft really is top craft, lemme say. Although, to be fair...there are some weird artistic choices in this movie, especially for a studio that mostly marketed to children and families. And yeah, I’m talking about the Harpy and the Tree, as their designs are...why? The Tree is comic relief, OK, I get that. But the Harpy is just...weird. Looks nothing like traditional harpies, for one, but the, uh...only human parts on her are just odd. Legitimately not sure why they were there. Answers to that question are very welcome.

Music and Editing: 8/10

The music’s great! I’m actually tempted to put a song from here on my playlist, but I probably won’t. It’s all composed by Jimmy Webb, and much of it is sung by America. It’s also somewhat remembered to this day, and it’s maybe one of the most iconic parts of the film outside of the unicorn itself? So, why not a 10/10? I mean...look, I don’t want to put them on blast here, but Bridges and Farrow are BAAAAAAAD. They really are not good singers, and they make that pretty well-known in their songs. Just saying...that was a mistake. Could we not have given Haggard a heavy metal song, considering who played the character?

Yeah, that seems right to me. I do like this movie, and I know that it’s beloved by some, but...eh, I dunno. Watching this is an adult probably isn’t helping this movie’s quality for me. Who knows? maybe my future kids’ll like it. Then again...

...maybe I’ll show this to them when they’re older. Or maybe not.

Well, after this point, Topcraft would be sold three years later, making this their last straight-up film for Rankin-Bass, and the last one with a studio from the United States. In 1984, they’d work on another major film, right at home in Japan. It was based on the work of a newly popular mangaka, and that mangaka also was the director of this, his second film. That movie was called Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and the mangaka was Hayao Miyazaki.

And I am VERY tempted to make this the next movie...but no. No, this one’ll keep...until May. No, we’re going to progress further into Miyazaki’s career, after he’d bought out Topcraft and renamed it to Studio Ghibli. We’re going 4 years into the future, after Miyazaki’s name was well-established in Japan, and soon-to-be in the United States. Buckle up, people, and grab your broomsticks. We’re headed to Japan!

thoughts on Min Ha x Suk Hyung... and Suk Hyung’s depression?

I’m still not sure what to think about episode 12... I’ve rewatched a few scenes a few times and espceially two scenes again just a few minutes ago ... and I’m so f*cking depressed right now lol

Ik Jun (IJ) noticed Min Ha’s (MH) feelings for Suk Hyung (SH) and confronts him about it in the last episode. SH tells him that MH confessed her feelings but he turned her down. Considering that MH confessed in October / episode 10, I’m suspecting that SH talked to her not long after her confession, as he tells IJ that he hates feeling awkward or uncomfortable while working and so he met her outside the hospital and talked to her. SH even feels the need to tell IJ that he really means it, that he’s not interested in dating anyone right now and that “obviously” he’s not interested in MH either. He likes being alone. When IJ tells him to not just rely on his friends but to get comfort from his family and the loved ones around him, SH replies with: “I don't want her to get hurt. She might get hurt because of me and my situation. After seeing how hard it was for Sin Hye (his ex-wife), I promised myself not to forge any relationships in the future.” (We never really got to know why it was hard for his ex-wife, though...)

When I first watched that scene, my shipper heart was in shock so I didn’t pay too much attention to the dialogue. After rewatching it the first time, I couldn’t help but start thinking that he might actually feel a bit more for MH than what one would feel for his junior but he didn’t want to start dating her because he’s worried and doesn’t want MH to get hurt...

They didn’t show us the scene when SH turned her down, so I don’t know how MH reacted and how she felt. At least we know she’s still around SH and she didn’t seem uncomfortable nor unhappy in episode 12. Maybe the scene in episode 11 (when she’s standing in front of his office and wants to ask him out for dinner) already happened after he turned her down?

Regardless of that, she still seems to seek his company and especially wants to eat with him at work. I’m pretty sure her feelings are the same but as she said herself she just wanted to be honest and tell him that she likes him and that she won’t make it obvious at the hospital.

She even texted and asked him out for dinner on Christmas. And as we all know her wish was to get her first kiss of the year on Christmas while wearing matching rings. MH messaged SH that she doesn’t want to pressure him and he doesn’t have to eat with her. With a sad (?) look on his face, he turns her invitation down. He wants to text her “Merry Christmas” but deletes that part before sending. Again, we don’t see how Min Ha reacts. Which makes me really sad. I want to know how she feels. She is a high spirit and that’s one of the reasons why I fell in love with her character. Despite that, she’s a very emotional person and I think that him turning down not only her feelings but also her invitation to have dinner on Christmas crushed her spirits. She seemed to look forward to have dinner with him even if there’s little hope she will get her kiss (because she also texted him that she really hopes the he can come). I just really hope that she was able to spend the evening with her friend and that that wasn’t a lie just not to pressure him...

...and then after that texting scene, we see SH’s ex-wife calling him.

You know, after SH told IJ that he turned MH down, I was bawling. But I was getting my hopes up again becaus of two later scenes in episode 12:

Song Hwa and Jung Won talk about SH and how he supposedly is a person who enjoys food the most when he’s eating alone. CUE scene of him eating alone. BUT suddenly MH turns up, wants to eat with him together and, after being a bit hesitant, he agrees. He even smiles when she’s pulling out the drinks and snacks from her pockets. ... SO, yes, we saw a lot of scenes of him enjoying his alone time BUT we saw a shift towards him feeling more comfortable eating with others (than just his best friends). And mostly, we saw him eating with MH. On top of that, two times just in episode 12. Yes, maybe it’s just because MH is kind of intrusive ...but SH didn’t shy away from running away from eating with others (episode 3, when several female colleagues want to join him at the cafe). And whenever he’s with MH, he seems less uncomfortable eating with someone else and he even smiles... (So why would he, as a person who likes to eat alone, eat with MH several times??? He seems to feel different towards her, in a positive way, than compared to other people, right???!!!)

After all the friends eat together one day before Christmas, they talk about what they will do the next evening. And SH doesn’t reply and stays quiet... as if he has plans for Christmas evening. (Maybe a date with MH?????!!!) SH tells them that he doesn’t want to waste time and wants to live doing the things he likes. (Did he change his mind and wants to start dating her????)

...but my hopes were crushed yet again when he turns down her invitation. WHat were his plans for that evening (if he had any)? Did he meet his ex-wife on Christmas evening? And that’s why she was calling him? And if so, why did they meet.....? We don’t get to know :///

And then, when I rewatched his scenes in episode 12, especially his scene with IJ and the ending scene, a baaaaaaad, really baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad thought hit me. What if SH is sick......? Terminally ill? It’s such a trope, I know. At first, I thought, maybe he’s kind of depressed because he turned MH down despite having feelings for her... but watching all the scenes back to back idk that didn’t really add up...? OMFG he looks so depressed when he tells IJ that he likes to be alone and that he doesn’t want to hurt MH because of his situation. He lookes so f*cking depressed when he tells his friends that he doesn’t want to waste time and wants to live doing the things he likes. Then again, he has this sad puppy look when he gets MH’s message and when he turns her down, but also when his ex-wife calls him.

Why would they end Hospital Playlist with that scene? Remember, Hospital Playlist even starts with a SH scene, together with Song Hwa, they enter the place where they are going to practice with their band. Who was the one who started talking about this whole band thing? It was SH. And in episode 12 he tells his friends with a depressed look: “I want to live doing the things I like and the things that I want to do right now. That's why I wanted to start a band. I... used you guys.“

It would even make more sense that in case he has some kind of feelings for MH, that he still turns her down because he might die soon and doesn’t want to hurt her and instead wants her to be happy with someone else...

I hope I’m wrong. I hope that SH is fine and that he has some feelings for MH and everything will work out in season 2? Whatever it is that troubles SH (yo please no terminal illness) gets resolved, and maybe he starts dating MH?? With a little help of IJ’s matchmaking powers??? ...or maybe SH isn’t ill but MH will not be a thing in season 2 which will make me increadibly sad but I just want MH and SH to be happy. If I get a scene in season 2 with MH being happy, it would be easier for me to cope when they both go their seperate ways.

Part of what made me feel so crushed about my sunken ship after watching episode 12 was not seeing MH’s reaction (to his rejections, especially her behaviour outside of work or when she isn’t with SH) or some kind of closure for her after being turned down... A sad sigh when she gets SH’s message but a smile afterwards that show she knows she’ll get over it? Or at least a scene that she isn’t by herself but eats dinner with her friend? ... but they didn’t show any of that at all... :((((

Which, regardless of my bad hunch, leaves me with a obviously -for whatever reason- sad looking SH, a most probably heart broken MH (because it isn’t shown otherwise) ...and because of all that, a sad me :((((

18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

one scene in particular i was very happy with was the scarecrow encounter from part ii of starry-eyed. i was so excited to write that scene that i think it was the third or fourth thing i wrote for that part of the fic and then i kept retouching it while i worked on the rest, so it felt the most polished.

The section in question starts with:

“You see it before it sees you - a familiar silhouette, slender and dark and dense against the cream-colored gray of the midmorning sky.” 

and goes all the way to:

“You've seen worse things.”

it’s a LONG one and for all i’m happy with how it turned up that kinda really highlights one of my biggest flaws as a writer, which is my tendency to run too indulgent when less could be more. but in terms of all the ground i wanted to cover with that scene, it did exactly what i wanted it to. it laid some plot threads i’m keen to unwind later, it highlighted the nature of jet’s self-destructive tendencies, it fed into jet’s history and future characterization, and the hope is that the end result is...unsettling. unmasking this nightmare that’s stalked jet for a decent chunk of his backstory had this catharsis factor that was really satisfying to bait and switch. because now there’s no catharsis. he takes off the scarecrow’s helmet and underneath, it’s just a person. and worse, it’s a person who’s been...altered in some deep-seated, potentially horrifying way.

i’ve discovered that i really love writing action, especially for danger days because i can get away with making it all extreme thanks to the camp factor that was present in the music videos. so i got to have everything that i loved to explore all in one drawn-out scene - the nitty-gritty of day to day desert survival, some very inelegant action (even more than writing action scenes, i love writing action scenes done between people who are floundering a little and aren’t at the top of their game), and of course, some delicious delicious character flaws.

cause jet makes a baaaaaaad choice in that scene. he makes a bad choice and he makes it based on impulse, fear, vengeance, and desperation, and he nearly dies for it. at his core, jet has a lot of anger for what BLi and the world it made has done to him and the people he loves. he pushes all that anger into a desperate, ruthless compassion because if he doesn’t, this scene is what happens: it eats him up from the inside out and he has no outlet for it other than to do something really, really stupid and self-destructive. it’s only thanks to the fact that the scarecrow was injured that he didn’t actually die.

it was also a scene where i got to dig into how scarecrows...are. but i can’t say too much more cause that’s gonna be relevant in later installments :)

20. What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written?

for canon characters who are “minor” in the context that they haven’t gotten a lot of screentime in the fic series just yet: mmmm is it a cop-out to say newsagogo? i didn’t expect to love writing her as much as i did, but she got a pretty meaty part recently. if gogo doesn’t count, then i’ll say i really enjoy writing dj hot chimp and cherri cola too. so maybe i just love the djs in general. thats not a crime

if by “minor” you mean ocs that got bit parts: Dust Devil was one of my favorites to craft and then implement. they’re such a shit and just unreliable enough of a narrator to make just about everything he says questionable. they’re shameless in every respect, unapologetic about everything, and prone ot embellishment to the point where he’s fronting constantly. simultaneously exactly what jet needed in the moment and very much using jet to their own ends at the same time. was always going to go out the way he did.
